Jerusalem spotlight: Nightlife

The real Uganda may be a cash-strapped African nation best known for a bloodthirsty dictator and the Entebbe crisis, but Jerusalem's Uganda is an oasis of painful hipness tucked away between downtown and the Russian Compound. Indie comics line one wall, indie records another, electronica, dub and art-metal fill the air.

Jerusalem bars tend to aspire to being either nightlife hotspots or hipster dives. Slow Moshe is surely a member of the latter category, but it's also a "local," making the place an anomaly for the city. Owned and managed by the namesakingly leisurely Moshe Levi, this modest establishment is a hub of Nachlaot culture.

Don't let the fact that it's known by some as an Israeli-style pick-up bar scare you. This bar is one of the few places where mid-twenty-somethings to mid-thirty-somethings can enjoy drinks without the "pozot" or attitudes so often associated with some of the trendier Jerusalem hangouts.
