Austrian Hospice

Hostels A Jerusalemite Pick 27 rooms Via Delorosa 37 Old City 02-626-5800 www.austrianhospice.com

Walking into the Austrian Hospice, one feels that he has arrived in Christian Old Jerusalem. The front doors, heavy and wooden, open to a two-floor ascent and a wide outdoor space completely removed from the cramped alleys of the Old City. High ceilings and expansive marble floors are standard. Generous cushioned seating areas with free wi-fi service and a cafeteria are available for all, as well as a beautiful outdoor seating area.

And no religiously inspired Christian hostel would be complete without a Roman Catholic church, which is open 24 hours and has services on Sundays and feast days. The church boasts stained-glass windows and paintings of the faith. The Austrian Hospice is perhaps best known for its roof, which offers one of the most spectacular views of the Old City. One can sit and bathe in true Middle East religious diversity, within a stone's throw of mosques, churches and Israeli flags. The rooms are modest yet accommodating, with closet, table, view and, of course, cross on the wall.
