CanelaRestaurants Fusion/International, Mediterranean A Jerusalemite Pick Shlomtzion Hamalka St. 8 City Center/Mamilla 02-622-2293 Sunday to Thursday, 12:00 to 15.30, 18:00 to 22:30; Friday 12:00 to one hour before Shabbat (seating until 13:30 to 14:00); Saturday one hour after Shabbat until last customer$$$$ (Over 100 NIS per person) Kosher/Rabbinate Surely there must have been some mistake made that led to the establishment of Canela on uber-chic Shlomtzion Hamalka Street in downtown Jerusalem. On the surface, Canela appears a lot like its fellow Shlomtzion restaurants: It's softly lit and well-appointed, it's a bit on the pricey side, it appeals to a young and trendy crowd, it offers upscale fusion cuisine with Israeli flair... but there's something a little off. Canela, unlike the other Shlomtzion joints which swim with fruits de mer, is kosher. And what a kosher restaurant. The décor is fantastic – dig that funky white baby grand piano sitting in the midst of all those dark wood tables and leather-upholstered chairs. The menu, which comes in two incarnations, business lunch (12:00-15:30) and evening, is filled with creative gourmet Middle Eastern/Continental meat dishes ranging from goose leg on lentil salad to fish fillet with lemon cream and tomatoes to fish stew with saffron, celery and onions. And you'll be more than spoiled for choice with wine, with dozens of Israeli varieties represented. Canela is so hip, it's hard to believe it's kosher. Search Jerusalemite City Guide
