$$$$ (Over 100 NIS per person) Kosher/Rabbinate

Many an Orthodox Jew has decried the lack of true gourmet kosher food; even in Israel, the Jewish state, gourmet cuisine often embraces all that is treif with unbridled enthusiasm. Apparently God heard the complaint of his children, for he sent unto them the founders of 1868, a ritzy restaurant that imports a taste of Tel Aviv gourmet to Jerusalem – and it's 100% kosher.

The restaurant exudes a class and refinement often lacking in the kosher restaurant world – from its menu to its location. The name 1868 refers to the year in which the building housing the restaurant was constructed, a classic Jerusalem stone structure conveniently located for city visitors across from the David Citadel hotel.

The menu does not lend itself to easy description – both French and Italian cuisines exert obvious influence (spaghetti in hazelnut vinaigrette, foie gras with Granny Smith apples), as does 1868's Middle Eastern locale (eggplant with techina), but dishes appear from as far afield as South America (ceviche). 1868 also stocks a huge selection of kosher wines and employs a sommelier to help you choose.

Finally a restaurant where a lady can feel like a lady. I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw that there were separate menus for women without the prices listed. Perhaps feminists may not find that a laughing matter, but hey I really wasn't the one paying so why see the prices?
The service was attentive, as promised, and the food was almost perfect though my duck breast was a bit fatty; but you can't have everything right?
A whopping five stars from me- I really cannot find anything to complain about.
Here's an interesting question though- when you run up a 1000 NIS bill, does that waitress really deserve more then minimum 10-12%? Will she feel slighted for not getting the optimal 15%? We decided to err on the side of caution, and go that extra mile for her, all the while thinking that the same money could go to pay for a sushi dinner for two..

Sometimes places earn reputations for being a cut above the rest for good reason. Just quality ingredients put together by people who aren't messing around. Respect.
