The name "Gan Hapa'amon" means "bell park," and ensconced at its center is the reason for the curious name: a painstaking reproduction of the Liberty Bell, that cracked yet enduring symbol of the American Revolution. Israel may not have seen a proper revolution since Bar Kochba's uprising against the Romans in the second century CE, but that didn't stop the city of Jerusalem from dedicating the park and its replica bell in honor of the 200th anniversary of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence.

Gan Hapa'amon sprawls from the hotel district on Keren Hayesod Street down to the beginning of Emek Refaim and Beit Lechem streets, encompassing walking paths, playgrounds, basketball courts, picnic areas and a reliably vibrant sampling of Jerusalem's residents, from Orthodox Jewish American families to Moslem Israeli Arabs.

Festivals, performance art and sports events are often hosted at the park, making Liberty Bell Park a center of Jerusalem culture to complement the neighboring German Colony.
