Is there a more reliable device for building dramatic tension than a battle between adoptive and biological parents over a child? Perhaps, but what if the adoptive parent was Israeli and the biological parents Palestinian? Such is the premise of The Return to Haifa, whose Palestinian protagonists flee Haifa in advance of the IDF in 1948 and leave their child behind to be raised by a Holocaust survivor. Twenty years later, they return, and things get predictably tangled - if relevant.
