Mike's Place: September 5 to September 11, Country Boys and More...

Popular music A Jerusalemite Pick Mike's Place Jaffa St. 37 City Center/Mamilla 052-267-0965 www.mikesplacebars.com September 05 2008 - August 11 2008 22:00 FREE

Mike's Place feels like home to many members of the Jerusalem Anglo community as it features a five-hour happy hour from 16:00 until 21:00, billiards, and big sports monitors. The bar also offers live music nightly at 22:30 downstairs in a stone cave-like venue that, after hearing English all night over Jerusalem's only Tex-Mex bar food, serves as the sole reminder that you are still in the Middle East. Both the American year abroad Yeshiva students and the hipped out Carlbachian/Nachlaot crowd call the bar home, but welcome others as well. This week's lineup includes some regulars like Assaf and Barry, open Mic Night, and a Jam Session, and some irregulars including Country Boys and Jerusalem Blues Cats.

  • September 5: Jtown Jammers play blues and rock.
  • September 6: Assaf and Barry play acoustic rock and blues.
  • September 7: Sports Night and Pool Tournament. Watch all the sports games from around the globe. Pool Tournament begins at 21:30. Sign up at the bar.
  • September 8: Open Mic Night! Get your 15 minutes of fame. Whip out your guitar and let's see what you've got!
  • September 9: Local musicians join forces for a freestyle jam session at the late-night gathering spot for Jerusalem’s native English speakers.
  • September 10: Country Boys features country, folk, bluegrass, Dylan, and the band's original concoctions. Lead singer of the band, Ari Ben-Yam, performs annually at the Jacob's Ladder Folk Festival. His lyrics, often biting and sarcastic, depict current Israeli and Jewish issues.
  • September 11: Members of funk, soul, and blues band Jerusalem Blues Cats met at jam sessions and while working together and various musical projects. Their style rings of B.B. King and Cotton James.
