Today, after the construction of the ritzy (and often empty) David's Village luxury neighborhood and the long, long, long-awaited completion of the upscale Mamilla Mall, Mamilla is one of Jerusalem's hottest properties, but the neighborhood squeezed between the Old City and downtown was not always so glamorous; it was turned into a no-man's land by Jordanian snipers after Jordan's annexation of the West Bank in 1948, and after the unification of the city in 1967 development stalled for decades as various parties argued over the plan for the neighborhood's rebirth. Hebrew-speakers can get a detailed view of this oft-overlooked section of Jerusalem thanks to the Tower of David Museum, which is 2-hour tours of Mamilla every Friday, starting at the museum and ending with free coffee and cake in the shopping district.
