Far Over the Sea

Children, Theater A Jerusalemite Pick Train Theater Liberty Bell Park Yemin Moshe/Talbieh 02-561-8514 www.traintheater.co.il June 28 2008 11:00 40 NIS

Calling all children ages 4-8 to pay tribute to the timeless work of poet Hayyim Nahman Bialik. The Ukrainian native is most famous for his long nationalistic poems which summon the reawakening of the Jewish people and songs for children which have become a staple of Israeli nursery school life. Bialik's renowned (and often forgotten) poems come to life through old objects, puppets, and original music in Far Over the Sea. The play tells the story of a bird and professional actress Shahar Marom who find Bialik's poetry book...but the pages are blank! (i.e. the poems are missing.) The mystery unfolds as the two embark on a journey through Tel Aviv meeting personified objects and gathering clues on street signs and bulletin boards. Director Alina Ashbel asks the question, "How is Bialik's rich, imaginary and archaic language relevant to the children of Israel today?"

*In Hebrew.
