Laila Lavan: Late Night FunFestivals, Parties, Popular music, Tours A Jerusalemite Pick various venues City Center/Mamilla aguda.org.il/layla.lavan June 02 2008 2:00 to 4:00The brand name under which the Student Union has organized a maddening variety of celebrations in honor of Jerusalem Day (Yom Yerushalayim) as well as Student Day, Laila Lavan is a world unto itself. The best advice one can offer the young urban reveler would be to show up in the area of Independence Park on the night of June 1 and just go with the flow. The main stage may be loaded with A-list entertainers, but that lineup goes on brief hiatus from 2:00 until 4:00, when plenty of wee-hour fun activities are on tap. For those of us who need a little bit of down-time between party waves, a chill-out tent, complete with cushions and movie screenings, will be set up on the main Laila Lavan grounds at Independence Park. High-concept themed walking tours of the area depart from there, as does a scavenger hunt with a grand prize of $550. Also nearby is an all-night dancing partly, which threatens to bring old-school Zionist dance into the new, global-themed millennium, with hora at 2:00 and salsa at 3:00. Several area live music venues are gearing up for live music sets, free for Laila Lavan bracelet holders and at discounted admission rates for others. These offerings include the Terra Rosa ethnic ensemble at Canaan, chanteuse Dana Berger at Constantine, a Jerusalem-themed open mic lineup at Maya Bar, a jazz jam session at Tmol Shilshom, a DJ set from Marky Funk at Hakatzeh and Yonatan "Johnny" Razel's piano-driven, spiritual soul at Beit Avi Chai. Elsewhere, a series of mini-festivals also under the Laila Lavan umbrella kick into gear at 2:00, including the Alive and Kicking street fair on Ben Shetach St., complete with video art, guitar jam sessions and street bars; Tel Aviv's famous urban boutique chic T-Market (pictured) over on Ben Sira St.; and a special zula (chill-out) with a rooftop bar, live music and still more movie screenings at Shamai St.'s Shorashim Center. Plus, many of the city center's nightlife hotspots are offering eye-opening (or perhaps eye-droopening) drink specials, including half off beers on tap at places like Diez, Prague and Open. For a complete list of Laila Lavan-related activities, check out the Student Union website.
