Curator Amitai Mendelson takes on the challenge of presenting the best of 1998-2008 which, given Israeli artists' recent successful forays into the international art world, is not an easy range to edit. The resulting collection strives to respond to today's world and show what we're experiencing, thinking, hoping for and dreaming of. And you may be surprised to discover that we're living in pretty difficult times - or as Israeli artists see it: a world which is fraught with struggle and conflict, and a world from which many want to escape. Among the powerful images are sculptures by the formidable Sigalit Landau, paintings by the intense Eliezer Sonnenschein, photography by the ubiquitous Ad Nes, a short film by the techno-savvy Miri Segal, and an installation by the politically-charged Ohad Meromi. This exhibition is highly recommended for anyone looking to get a better sense of Israeli art from a contemporary and historical perspective, especially when viewed within the context of the larger six-part exhibition.
