Our café!

Arcaffe's signature beverageCoffee-wise, downtown Jerusalem is known for charming independent shops like Nocturno, Blaser, Gulindo and Shammai 12, as well as international franchises like Coffee Bean – although the nixed plans to open a Starbucks on Ben Yehuda St. might be one of the only happy outcomes of the intifada.

However, even the national chains operating here have a local flavor: The now-ubiquitous Café Hillel and Café Aroma, the latter even maintaining a shop in downtown Manhattan, still operate their flagship branches in the neighborhood.

Despite making a mean espresso, Tel Aviv's Arcaffe never really belonged on Jerusalem's Hillel St., where it existed for about a year, and it seemed sometimes that even its employees were aware of this. Last week, the branch finally shut down operations, a statement from corporate headquarters attributing the closure to a dispute with the property's landlord.

The nationwide brand name is supposedly still searching for a suitable replacement Jerusalem location, and Jerusalemite wonders if perhaps our greater metro area might not have one.

Comments by aabbey: I would love it if Arcaffe came to the former Shakespeare pub site on Beitar Street off Yanovsky in "Talpiyot-Arnona." That spot has been empty for about 6 months now - and the furniture from Shakespeare is still in there. It's a big space - the owners prob. want some ridiculous rent. Here's an open promise to any quality cafe that comes in there - you open, I'll bring there and bring my wife and friends. Does Jerusalemite know what plans there are for that space?
Comments by harry: No idea what the plans are but considering the amount of housing in that area these days there is no reason that a cafe couldn't sustain itself. Haven't heard anything though.
