Big discount for brave Jerusalem resident

Mayor Lupolianski shows off his very big Jerusalemite card.

You should see the size of his wallet

In an effort to stem the flow of young people from Jerusalem, and to reward those that remain with something more concrete than the promised ability to ride a train to the northern suburbs by 2028, the Jerusalem city government recently released the Yerushalmi Card, a special photo ID for Jerusalem residents that offers steep discounts at numerous Jerusalem locations, from museums to parking lots.

The Jerusalem resident's card, which has been in the planning for over seven years, dating back to the tenure of former mayor Ehud Olmert, was launched eight months before the city's mayoral elections.

The card, which can be purchased at City Hall for NIS 18 and is valid for a two-year period, offers city residents aged 16 and older discounts ranging from five to 30 percent at 170 institutions throughout the city, including museums, theaters, and sports centers, city officials said.

"This is not a credit card, but a card with the heart of a Jerusalemite," said Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski at a city hall press conference at which the card was launched.

It's not just theaters and museums (or festivals, movies and concerts), either; cardholders can expect - wait for it - a 25% discount on birthing classes and on post-childbirth checkups at the Tipat Halav clinic. Jerusalem wants you to have babies. And if you'd rather have a dog than a child, you're also eligible for 25% off a license for your puppy.

Not a bad deal for 18 shekels. The full list of discounts can be viewed at the Yerushalmi Card's official website.
