Vegging out in Jerusalem

Jerusalem might have a delicious root named after it, but the city is also the namesake for a griddled chicken innards dish.

World Vegetarian Week, which started yesterday, is certainly a much bigger deal in other cities, where restaurants jump on the activism bandwagon, but here in Jerusalem, where green living is on the rise, there are still plenty of options for vegetarian dining, including local favorites Te'enim and the Village Green - that is, should one choose to go that way.

Beyond places that market themselves as strictly vegetarian, our city is also loaded with a cornucopia of options for meatless dining, thanks to the popularity of kosher certification, which dictates that if you serve dairy, dead flesh in the kitchen is a nischt-nischt.

Comments by Rebecca: I ate at Te'enim once and all i remember is a lot of chewing. I ordered a salad with so many raw carrots that I couldn't even get a sentence out - I had to devote all my time making sure not to choke. And it was one expensive salad at that - something like 36 shekels for tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and red pepper. I'll make you an awesome salad for 5. Just ask the Jerusalem salad community.. wherever they might be.
Comments by Harry: I ate there once as wekk, maybe eight years ago, they were still on Emek Refaim back then. I recall eating a very large mushroom.
Comments by greg: what is 'vegetarian'?
Comments by james: On the 2 or 3 times I've eaten there, I've had a suberb stuffed eggplant/aubergine.
However, we're off out for meat tonight ... didn't know it was world veggie week! sorry!
