Commemorating Holocaust Day 2008 in Jerusalem

by ben April 30 2008

Tonight is the beginning of the 24 hours dedicated to Israel's commemoration of the Holocaust. Among the memorial events are ceremonies at Yad Vashem and community centers as well as television and radio special programs.

The Yad Vashem ceremony will be webcast here, while a complete list of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Day events can be seen here

On Thursday morning at 10, the traditional siren marks a minute of silence, when nearly everyone in the country stops whatever it is that they're doing and stands, solemnly contemplating the incomprehensible.

Pictured is Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council Joseph "Tommy" Lapid, speaking at the 2007 Yad Vashem Holocaust Day ceremony (courtesy Yossi Ben David for Yad Vashem).
