Congrats to Hebrew University

Municipal news

Our own hometown university has just been ranked the 64th best university in the world, and the fourth best in Asia and the Pacific, according to a report by a Shanghai university Jerusalemite has never heard of. According to the Hebrew University's Department of Media Relations:

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been ranked 64th among the world’s 100 top universities in the new Academic Ranking of World Universities issued by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.
The Hebrew University was the only Israeli institution included in the top 100.
Topping the list were the American universities Harvard, Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley, and Cambridge University in Britain.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University each year evaluates more than 2,000 universities in the world and ranks the top 500 among them. The rankings are based on a combined scale of academic criteria that include awards won by alumni and staff, articles published in leading scientific journals, and the number of highly cited researchers. The Chinese university’s rankings have achieved respected international recognition.

Hebrew University President Prof. Menachem Magidor said that the Hebrew University was proud to be ranked 64th among the world’s best universities. “However,? he cautioned, “one cannot ignore the danger inherent in the cuts which have been imposed on higher education in recent years. We can only hope that as a result of the report of the Shohat Commission the funds which have been cut will be restored, otherwise we will not be able to continue to preserve the place of the Hebrew University among the top 100 universities in the world.?

It certainly would be a crushing blow to national and civic pride to have the Hebrew U slip down to, say, 70.

But what's really important about this revelation is that it confirms Jerusalemite's suspicions that Jerusalem is the finest city in the land, and its residents are better-looking, better-educated, more confident, better-smelling and more adept at holding their liquor than those rubes in Tel Aviv and Haifa with their lowly-ranked institutes of higher learning. We should have a parade. Rub it in their faces a little. Who's with me?
